Introduction to cupcake decorating

Class info:

Held in my home, this is a short, 2.5 hrs, practical, but fun, session ideal for beginners and those who have never worked with sugar paste (also known as fondant) and/or buttercream before but want to learn how to get creative with their cupcakes as well as learning basic skills which can be applied to larger cakes.

Don’t worry if you’re not artistic as you’ll make your sugar paste decorations using a variety of methods including moulds, plunge cutters, and, depending on the class theme, by hand before adding to your cupcakes or taking them home to keep for future projects.  Using premade buttercream, which you can add colour to if you want, you’ll learn how to pipe the classic rose and swirl on 6 premade vanilla cupcakes.  Time permitting; you’ll have an opportunity to try out some other piping nozzles before you bring everything together to create your masterpieces.

During this session you’ll learn;

  • how to colour and work with sugar paste; how it’s different from modelling/flower paste and how to store your decorations;
  • how to make basic sugar paste decorations which you can use on your cupcakes or keep for future projects;
  • how to make and colour buttercream;
  • how to pipe a classic rose and swirl using buttercream;
  • how to pipe using 2 or more colours together.

With prior notice, I can theme this introductory level class to meet particular requirements eg baby shower, farmyard animals, Mother’s Day etc.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of 4 and while children (over 14) are welcome to classes, they need to be accompanied by a paying adult. Please note there is NO baking in this class. If you want to learn how to bake cupcakes AND decorate them, please contact me to discuss further.
